These days people seem to spend more time talking on the telephone. There are friends and family we want to talk to about what’s going on in our lives and business associates with whom we want to discuss deals and projects. Prepaid calling cards offer a great way for us to call people from almost any telephone and from nearly anywhere in the world. Prepaid calling cards were introduced in the 1970′s in Italy and are now widely used in most parts of the world.

Prepaid phone cards provide a low cost and simple way to dial long distance calls and are also very beneficial to have in case of an emergency. Prepaid phone cards do have advantages when compared to standard credit phone cards. For example, credit phone cards usually charge different rates at different times of the day or on different days of the week, while prepaid cards offer a set per minute rate. Note: There are prepaid cards that charge a higher rate for International long distance than for domestic long distance.

Using a prepaid calling card is really easy. You dial a toll free access number, punch in your PIN number, and then dial the number you want to call. With most cards you are informed of the available call time remaining on your card. Prepaid calling cards are also very convenient. Whenever you need to use a pay phone there’s no need to look for change, just take out the prepaid calling card and you are set.

Prepaid calling cards also help you to budget your money and manage how much you spend on long distance calls. Prepaying your phone calls gives you more control over your spendings and allows you to avoid those monthly telephone bills.

You can buy prepaid phone cards at most any store or gas/convenience station, but your smartest choice would be the Internet. Online, you can compare different phone card offers and associated rates to make sure that you get the best deal for your money. The best card offer for you may vary depending upon your needs. Are most of your phone calls short or long? Do you call mostly domestic long distance or International long distance? Questions like these will help you to decide upon which prepaid phone card to buy.

Prepaid calling cards are popular these days because they are affordable and convenient. These cards are advertised and purchased from convenience stores, newspaper stands, gas stations and also on the Internet. With phone cards, you can do calls on regular phones, mobile phones, and pay phones. They are also handy and you can use them anywhere and at any time of the day to make domestic and international calls.
The Internet offers a variety of prepaid calling cards for you to choose from. These cards have different calling rates, services and features that can help you easily find the one card for your need. Certain features can make your calling experience most satisfactory so doing research is a must. For your convenience, a prepaid calling card has a PIN-less dialing feature that enables you to make a call straightaway without to enter the PIN again and again. You only have to sacrifice your prepaid phone card’s privacy and security. Just keep the card and the PIN in a safer place. Speed dialing feature helps you to store up to 25 numbers and you can just press a specific number assigned to the phone numbers every time you make a call. Businessmen are greatly benefited with these features since most of the time, they are in a hurry for a meeting and other important transactions.
Prepaid calling cards offer lower rates in making international calls compared to the regular telephone provider’s rate. The reason your calls can be so much cheaper than usual when you use a phone card is that your calls are no longer being routed through the normal phone network. Instead, calling card companies have their own international telephone networks, often using latest technology to their advantage. Some companies route calls through the Internet where the Internet acts as a bridge between local phone networks.
To check if your prepaid phone card functions well, try to contact the customer service for your trial call. This will ensure that you bought the card from a reliable company.

Do you often wonder how the idea of calling cards was even invented? Was there a fabulous story behind the beginnings of these now highly used cards? Most of us don’t stop to think about the beginnings of products that we use on a constant basis. But it is nice to look closer at the evolution of the calling card and understand the roots behind its invention.
It all started in 1975 with a basic idea to offer people a way to pay for calls when they did not have the funds. In 1976 there was a huge coin shortage in Italy that really set off the use of calling cards. The calling card did not official appear in the United States until 1987 when people started using the cards for convenience when they were on public telephones. The World Telecom Group was the business force behind the early calling cards.
The calling card business was growing faster than anyone had ever imagined. People were making huge amounts of money just by investing in companies that provided calling cards to the world. The novel idea of selling a card to pay for your phone calls was finally beginning to pay off. As the 1980s and 1990s came around the calling card business was booming.
World Telecom Group was the dominating player with the phone card introduction to the US public in 1987. In 1990 New York’s Regional Bell Operating Company launched a calling card campaign with the first non magnetic based phone cards used by dialing an access number and a PIN number to terminate calls.

The calling card became a full telecommunication business playing field by 1992 with all major companies releasing their own brand of calling card. The companies continued to market their long distance services as they were more profitable and easier than trying to convince the public to switch to a new, less convenient service; however, sales for the Plastic Wonders grew to about twelve million industry wide with no ceiling potential projected.
The consumers’ view of the calling card was service “To Go” and at a discounted rate offered by the local long distance carriers. Unlike some of the long distant plans by the local carrier that had different rates for different times, a calling card had a consistent flat rate and could be used from any phone to any phone continental US. By buying the pre paid phone cards, one knew exactly their long distant consumption versus the “hold your breath while you opened the bill” of the traditional long distance service. A Phone card as well offered convenience of not intruding on financial long distance budget of others by using their phone to make calls.
In 2001 the industry revolutionized its self again. The first prepaid mobile phone became available. After the minutes were used up, the phone could either be recharged or discarded and a new one purchased. A prepaid cell phone has all the convenience of a phone card, without the hassle of trying to find a phone to use. Prepaid wireless phones work identical to contract phones in terms of service quality and portability. Like the calling card market, analysts are predicting the prepaid mobile phone market to increase exponentially.
The calling card market was quickly becoming a fast past business. More and more businesses were beginning to offer cards and it was easier and easier for people to find a card that offered a low rate. Many people purchased calling cards instead of even bothering to get long distance on their phones at home.
Sales have skyrocketed to the millions since the first release on prepaid phones. Last September, 2005, IDT launched a new brand of prepaid cell phones targeted at the Latino and Hispanic population.
Now you can get calling cards at almost every convenience store and shopping center. You can find great deals and huge discounts. It is also possible to get calling card numbers through the Internet. You don’t get a physical card, but you pay for the number of minutes that you need and get a specialized pin number.
Before purchasing a calling card you should do a little research on the company and make sure they offer a good customer service department and that they do not have any complaints with the local better business bureau. There are tons of fly by night companies that pop up just to sell calling cards then quickly fall out of sight. Save yourself the headache by doing your research up front.

History of a calling card (phone card) has begun from the vandalism of payphones, which was caused by a shortage of coins in Italy in 1975. The first magnetic strip phone card was made so people wouldn’t need to use coins to make a call. This kind of service is getting more and more popular because the rates are decreasing faster in this area than in a post billed phone call service. In just over the last year, for some destinations the rates on calls with phone cards reduced on 45 %.

Phone cards benefits:

· Calling from any phone, including cellular, home, office, dorm and payphone.

· Calling you need wherever you are.

· PINless calling — skip entering your PIN when making calls (only in USA and Canada).

· Recharging in seconds. You can recharge your account in seconds or enable automatic recharging, and always you have minutes available.

· Control over expenses. You can gain the control to customize your billing increments using automatic recharge option.

How does it work:

1. Choose a calling card online.

2. Sign up using secure registration form and pay with your credit/debit cards securely online.

3. Receive PIN and instructions to the screen and a copy to e-mail address and start talking instantly. Use a PINless option as possible.

Thus when you purchase a prepaid phone card, you get no thing sensible by hands, but possibility to make calls. You are paying for long distance connection time in advance, and what’s more — with options associated with this phone card. Since the process completes very quickly, you can start making your calls instantly.

There are a lot of calling cards that differ in name, design, some options, including various fees, validity period, rounding, etc. In this article we will briefly define some terms:

· Permanent PIN is a refillable/rechargeable PIN. Each time when you add money to a card you recharge the same PIN number.

· Monthly charge is a periodic charge imposed by phone cards and might happen if there is a residual value left on your card at the end of the period. It can be monthly, semi-monthly or weekly, starting from the day you first use your phone card.

· Maintenance fee is charged to maintain services for some phone cards.

· Connection fee is charged anytime there is a connection. It ranges from $0. 50 to $2. 25.

· Validity period is some months. Phone card should be used within this period of first use.

· Rounding is from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. This is the basic unit for measuring the duration of a phone call. For example, your call time is 10 minutes and 45 seconds: if rounding is 1 min, your call time will be rounded up to 11 minutes; if rounding is 3 min, your call time will be rounded up to 12.

Some tips to choose the best calling card:

· A card with the lowest rate is not always the best one.

· For a short-term, if you intend to make a lot of long calls, use the cards with the lowest rates. Usually they have a maintenance fee. The maintaining services allow you to trace phone calls. This fee will be taken from your phone card balance every one or two weeks. The more weeks, the more money you lose. An optimal duration of this short-term period is 3 – 12 weeks. For this reason. . .

· For a long-term and if you make phone calls just once in a while, use the cards without maintenance fee. These cards usually have higher rates, but you don’t have to worry about your phone card balance going down if you do not call.

· Often the best choice is a calling card, which has no connection/maintenance fees.

· Pay attention if a card has local and toll free access numbers. Rates are usually higher when you use a toll free access number. It is recommended to choose a card that has local access number.

· The higher the rounding period, the more you lose.

And finally, the array of phone cards is dazzling. Don’t be daunted, though. You can always go back later and review order to keep or remove it as needed. In the last case your money will be back you, if your call time is left.
